A story about beginnings, courage, and Atelier Cinq suits
It's no coincidence that we make suits.
It is, rather, an invisible thread that connects us to the past, to family, to a man who not only tailored fabrics but also a path.
It all begins with my grandfather, Mitică — born in 1917 in a hamlet called Hulubești, in Dâmbovița county.
At just 14 years old, he left for Bucharest with 100 lei in his pocket and a lame leg, affected by illness. The first months were hard: he slept wherever he could — at relatives' houses or even on leaves, in Carol Park. Until one morning.
On Șerban Vodă Bridge, a well-dressed gentleman asked him if he wanted to become an apprentice in a tailor's shop. My grandfather, rather skeptical, replied that his father was a tailor in the countryside and that surely this man was not a tailor – he was too elegant.
But the next morning, he still went to the address he was given. And that's how it all began: at Witenberg Tailoring, where he was an apprentice, trainee, and then worker for 5 years.
At just 19 years old, he obtained his worker's card, and in 1939, based on a diploma issued by the Académie de Coupe Paum-Baléa & Louis Taufer in France, he became a master tailor and thus was able to open his own tailoring workshop.
His story was not without obstacles. The communist regime forced him to close the workshop, but he continued to tailor from his living room, faithful to his craft. I saw him as a child working quietly, measuring, drawing, trying on.
Back then I didn't know, but today I know: it was inevitable to carry on this tradition.
The first Atelier Cinq suit was created in 2022. It's called Yvette and is inspired by classic men's tailoring: a double-breasted jacket and high-waisted, flared trousers, cut from 100% wool fabric.
Since then, we have continued to work on pieces that honor the refinement of a well-constructed suit.
And for this autumn, we are preparing a new series of suits — with the same respect for detail and the same joy of creating.
Because, after all, a suit is more than a piece of clothing. It is a form of expression, of structure, of story.
